How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room
Oriental Rug Works

A fine oriental rug is the foundation a room is built on. Choose the right size and the furniture feels anchored; choose too small and even a masterpiece looks like an afterthought.
A fine oriental rug is the foundation a room is built on. Choose the right size and the furniture feels anchored, the space feels generous, and the rug's design can be seen and admired. Choose too small, and even a masterpiece looks like an afterthought. The good news is that a few simple guidelines take the guesswork out of it.
Start with the room, not the rug
Measure the room and note where the furniture sits. As a general rule, leave about 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls in a living or dining room. That frame of floor lets the border breathe and makes the room feel finished.
A simple size guide
| Room | Common rug size | Guideline |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | 8' x 10' or 9' x 12' | Front legs of every seat rest on the rug |
| Dining room | 8' x 10' or larger | Chairs stay on the rug when pulled out (about 24" past the table) |
| Bedroom (queen) | 8' x 10' | Rug extends 18–24" beyond the sides of the bed |
| Bedroom (king) | 9' x 12' | Same, with the rug starting under the nightstands or bed |
| Entry or hallway | Runner, 2'6" wide | Leave a few inches of floor on each side |
Tips that make the difference
- Bigger usually looks better. When in doubt between two sizes, the larger one tends to make a room feel more spacious.
- Tape it out. Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day.
- Mind doors and vents. Check that doors clear the pile and that heat vents aren't covered.
- Think about the design. A medallion rug looks best when the center isn't hidden under a coffee table; an all-over design is more forgiving.
- Use a good pad. It keeps the rug in place and adds comfort. We carry rug pads at the shop.
See sizes in person
Numbers help, but nothing replaces standing over a rug and seeing it at full scale. Bring your room measurements, and a few photos, to the showroom and we'll help you see what works. Common questions
Can I layer rugs? Yes. A smaller antique rug over a larger neutral one is a lovely way to show off a special piece.
Round or rectangular? Round rugs suit round tables and entryways; rectangles fit most living and dining rooms.
