What an oriental rug is
An oriental rug is a handmade rug from a weaving region of Asia or the Middle East. Persian rugs, woven in Iran, are one group. Turkish, Caucasian, Turkmen, Indian, and Chinese rugs are oriental rugs too. A rug described as "Persian style" or "Persian design" was not necessarily woven in Iran.
Persian rugs in New Hampshire has more on that difference. Photos of rugs at the shop are on the rugs page and in the gallery.
What to look for when you buy
These are general points for anyone shopping for a rug. They are not a catalog of what the shop has in stock.
- Measure the floor before you visit, so the size can fit the room.
- Hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and machine-made rugs are built differently. On many hand-knotted rugs the pattern shows on the back, and the fringe is the end of the warp, not a trim sewn on later.
- Wool, silk, and cotton look and feel different. Ask to see the rug flat and in the light.
- Look at the ends, the sides, and the field, and ask about condition before you decide.
The shop sells rug pads. A pad can keep a rug from sliding and can cushion the pile. Call or visit to ask what pads are in the shop. There is no price list on this site.
Cleaning, repair, and pickup
